Seasonal yard care
Planning a fall yard cleanup in Downers Grove
Decide what to clear, what can stay in the beds, and whether your yard needs one visit or a few passes through leaf season.

A fall cleanup does not need to strip every leaf out of every corner. The useful starting point is deciding which areas need to stay clear and which can hold some leaf material. A lawn, a front walk, and a quiet planting bed have different needs.
Walk the yard before booking
Make a short list of the areas you want included: the front and back lawn, planting beds, fence lines, patio, and walkways. Mention narrow gates, outdoor furniture, and any areas that stay wet. Photos help show how much leaf cover is already on the ground and how many trees are still holding leaves.
If you have plants you want left alone, mark them or point them out. A cleanup request should be specific about perennial trimming rather than assuming everything gets cut back.
Keep thick leaf cover off the grass
Illinois Extension explains that a heavy layer of leaves can smother turf. Light leaf cover can sometimes be shredded into small pieces with a mower, while heavier accumulations need a different approach. The aim is to avoid leaving the lawn buried beneath a wet mat.
That does not mean all leaves are waste. Extension's guide to reusing fallen leaves discusses composting, mulching, and the value of leaf cover for wildlife. Tell your cleanup provider if you have a compost area or beds where you want suitable leaf material retained.
Choose a sensible visit schedule
One visit after most leaves have fallen may suit a smaller yard. A property with several large trees may need an earlier pass to keep the lawn and paths usable, followed by a final cleanup. Ask how another round of falling leaves will be handled; a clean yard today can look different a few days later.
For an estimate, describe the current condition as well as the result you want. Clearing the lawn alone is a different job from clearing beds, moving debris from fence lines, and trimming selected perennials.
Confirm where the debris goes
- Will leaves be removed from the property or gathered in an agreed location?
- Are planting beds and hard surfaces included?
- Which plants, if any, will be trimmed?
- Is a second visit included or quoted separately?
